Joint Electromagnetic Board charts path for enhanced spectrum warfare capabilities

The Joint Electromagnetic Board (JEMB), a key subcommittee of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC), held its annual meeting on November 13, 2024, under the chairmanship of Air Marshal Jeetendra Mishra, Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Operations).
Senior officers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with representatives from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Department of Defence Production (DDP), and industry, convened to discuss advancements and integration in critical areas such as Electronic Warfare (EW), Signature Management, Emerging Technologies, EMI/EMC (Electromagnetic Interference and Compatibility), Spectrum Management, and Human Resource Development.
A key highlight was the launch of the AI-enabled ‘e-Tarang System’, an innovative solution for the automated planning and management of Defence Spectrum.
Developed in collaboration with the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N), e-Tarang will streamline interference-free operational planning for defence equipment in both wartime and peacetime.
The system is expected to enhance capability in higher frequency bands, furthering technology advancement in these critical areas.
The JEMB event also saw the release of the Technical Newsletter (TNL) 2024, an annual publication from the Joint Communications and Electronics Staff at HQ IDS.
The newsletter presents a detailed outline of emerging technologies poised to revolutionise modern warfare. It incorporates insights from all three Services, underscoring their joint commitment to advancing defence technology.
With a primary objective of fostering synergy in joint EW operations among the Services, the annual meeting established a roadmap for enhanced capabilities in Spectrum Warfare.
The event further prioritised technology development and training to keep pace with evolving defence needs. In a special address, Air Marshal Mishra emphasised the critical role of integrating EW assets across the Services for effective joint operations.
He also commended the first successful joint EW exercise held in September 2024, which demonstrated the strategic advantage of jointness in modern combat.
